WINTER FOOD ORDER ADVENTURE

WINTER FOOD ORDER ADVENTURE

December 12th, 2009

Well, we got the winter bulk food order into the ranch today. Travis and I left yesterday in the old ranch truck and headed down to Forks of Salmon to gas the ol’ rig up. We got there at dark and, since the lights quit working in the truck we were just in time. As we were expecting snow today, we couldn’t be sure what condition the roads would be in. We stayed in the community center in Forks last night and then this morning, of course,  the truck wouldn’t crank till we finally got a jump. We woke to snow coming down as well.  So off we go from Forks to Somes Bar to get the order, snow falling and, of course, the wipers don’t work.  Needless to say it was very slow going and my nerves were shot by the time we got there. We picked up the order and skidaddled it back to Forks. Thinking we’d have better luck going back up the Godfrey Ranch driveway, we decided to make a try for it. We didn’t get 100 yards off the pavement and could go no further. “Plan B” involved backtracking to Forks and trying to go over the Picayune. We did great till we got to the last steep stretch at the top. Slipping and sliding we found ourselves thinking about having to drive back down to the trailhead on Salmon River road and begin the multiple 5 mile hikes up the trail to get our hundreds of pounds of supplies in.  We proceeded to load hundreds of pounds of rocks from along side the road in the truck and, with my personal 160 pounds added over the back wheels, finally managed to get up and over the top.  From there it was “creep” along into Godfrey, down the Shoefly, over to Blue Ridge and down the ranch driveway in 1st gear……arriving exactly 24 hours after we left. A winter adventure to be sure! But we are now well stocked and will be well fed throughout the winter.
